Second Draft

I haven't put the double page spread on here because,
my audience focus group didn't think that there was
 anything wrong with it.

Audience Research 2

My audience thought that my first draft was good but there could be a few changes to make it better. They all thought that I should get rid of the small icon in the top left hand corner, so that there is more focus on the title. They also thought that I should have at least one picture on the contents page. They thought that there was nothing wrong with my double page spread.

Audience Focus Group

With my focus group I will show them all of my planning, and get there feed back as to what they think. Whether they like the masthead or the layout of the contents page. There will be three of my friends, who don't follow the crowd.

The first person is called Tom Cawte, and he goes to Worcester Sixth as well. He is in one of my lessons and he does Maths, further maths and physics. His secondary school is called River School which is in Worcester. He plays basketball, and is in the basketball academy. His favourite team is the Worcester Wolves. He is a Christian.

The other person in my focus group is called Alice Harris, but we all call her Ali. She also goes to Worcester sixth form. The subjects that she does are, Photography, Media studies, Fine art and PE. She also does Photography with me. She use to go to the River school as well. She plays netball for college, so therefore to the academy as well. Her favourite TV programmes are Miranda and Outnumbered. Also her favourite film is The Rocky Horror Show.

The last person in my focus group is a girl called Sade Gerald. She does a Sport BTec, at Worcester sixth form as well. Her secondary school was Evesham High. She plays for the college hockey team and does the academy, she also play for Stourport hockey club. She supports Birmingham City football club. One of her favourite films is Norbit.

Audience Research

Detailed Research into Forms and Conventions

The genre that I have chosen is Opera. The two magazines that I have analysed are called, 'Opera' and 'Opera Now' these are the only two English magazines that I could find. They both use different forms and conventions to attract their audiences. As I don't actually have an Opera magazine to hand, I have done all of it by using images from the internet.

Every magazine has to try and attract there reader in a way that they will want to read more so that they have to buy it. There are quite a lot of ways in which magazines can do this. When you first look at this front cover, the first thing that you see is the man standing there and he is looking like he is very pleased with himself, and that he has a lot of power, which could relate to the audience. The type of audience that would buy this magazine is people that would probably shop at places like Waitrose and Marks and Spencers.
All of the colours of this page go together very well, with the masthead being a dark orange and his jacket a light gold this could link up with the upper class status because these are colours that are normally seen as upper class. The name of the magazine ‘Opera’ is simple and not very creative which links to the audience because they are probably not very creative themselves. Although the colour of the masthead blends in with the image, I think that if it was in white then it would have stood out more, but because it isn’t it means that they even want the attention to be on the man rather than the masthead. The colour of the dateline, price and splash are all in white which means that it stands out slightly but not a lot. By online having a splash on the front page gives it a very elegant feel to it because if it was all covered up with writing then it wouldn’t seem sophisticated and it would cover up the background.
The whole of the front page is just about him. You can tell this by the way that the image has a blurry background which makes him stand out a lot more. The way that the background has been left the way that it is (not covered up) shows that the audience would be interested in it.The font of the masthead is small serif which connotates a very sophisticated style which links up very well with the audience type. The other type of font is very simple yet classic, so fits well.
The contents page, is just a single page, with on the other side an advert about the English National Opera theatre and what is showing there. The contents page itself actually has no colour on it at all; it is just black and white which connotates that it is elegant and sophisticated. The page has been split into two columns, with the masthead at the top in black. There are no images at all on this page showing what is going to happen inside which connotates that it is quite boring and wouldn’t appeal to a teenaged audience. Down the whole of the left hand column it is all just about how to contact them and it also has the editors on there.
On the next page of the magazine, which is a double page spread, it is all about an Opera artist. There are four pictures, but they are all in black and white, which fits very well with the target audience that they are going for. The type of fonts that they have used is quite classic and elegant. For the first paragraph they have used Italics and the first letter is in bold and a lot bigger than the rest, which connotates sophistication. None of the writing overlaps into the pictures, it is just alongside it.

By analyzing this magazine, it has shown me that for my magazine I want a sophisticated and elegant Masthead to attract my type of audience. It has also shown me that I don't want to overcrowd the front page with writing if there is a nice background.

This magazine cover is designed so that it will appeal to its audience so that they will buy it. There are a number of different ways in which ‘Opera Now’ magazine does this. Immediately the first thing that you see when you look at the front cover is the opera singer who looks like she is in mid way of singing. The masthead ‘Opera Now’ and the sell out line (which is in capitals) ‘The World’s Leading Opera Magazine’ themselves already show which type of audience would go to the opera. These would be people of an A or B standard on the Jicnars scale, and I would say that they are Traditionalists or Achievers in the Psychographics. You can tell this by, for starts of the masthead, ‘Opera Now’ the way that it is a serif font and is coloured white, which connotes sophistication and upper class. Also because the font is white and it’s on a black background it stands out more, which makes the magazine seem classic.

Although this magazine is targeted for wealthy people, it still has the normal conventions that a standard magazine would have like the barcode, freebie in the top right hand corner and the dateline. There are two main headlines on this front cover, and that’s about it, I think that this connotates that it is a very boring magazine and isn’t really teasing there audience. I also think that this could be saying that they don’t need to give lots of contents on the front page because there audience most likely will other just buy it anyway or they are subscribers to it. The audience is assumed to be wealthy as the price of the magazine is £5.95, which is very expensive compared to a lot of other magazines. Another way that you can tell that the audience is most likely to be wealthy is because of the quality of the paper is very good, which probably is one of the reasons as to why it is so expensive.
The layout of the double page spread is targeted very much for the target audience by the way that it is classic and quite boring because it is simply just in three columns. Also the colours that are used are very bland and quite light. Some of the writing used on the double page spread is in Italics, which connotates an upper class standard. The images that have been used on this double page spread are also very suitable for the audience that will read it. This is because the images that have been used are very simple and quite old, for example there is a picture of a house and that is in nothing special to it. None of the images on the page overlap or in contact with the writing, they have just simply been put on as they are, this style may fit with the target audience that they are going for, but if someone of my age were to look at it then they would find it very boring.

Initial Research: Genre

The first thing that I did was to type into Google 'different genres of a music magazine' which sent me to a lot of links.

I then clicked on the first link on the page which was the Yahoo Directory. On this page there were a lot of small links which sent you to a page of other links, which were magazine websites. As you can see by the picture, the writing that is in purple means that I have clicked on it to have a look.

I found it quite hard to decide on which genre to do as you can see by the amount of genres that I clicked on. I first had a look at Reggae, to see if I liked to style of any those types of magazines, but I didn't really like it, so I decided against it.

I went back to the Yahoo Directory page and clicked onto the Opera links, which sent me to a few more links that I could click onto, but out of all of the seven links, only one of them sent me to a magazine.

The magazine website it sent me to is simply called 'Opera' which is a UK magazine. I found it quite hard to find another magazine which is made in the UK, but I have managed to find one.

The other magazine that I am going to use is called 'Opera Now' which I think as far as I am aware is a UK magazine. I have chosen to do an opera magazine because really there is only two out there for people to read.

Main Task: Magazines

I am to produce a front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine. It must all be my own work, and there is a minimum of 4 images. My key dates for this task is that the Research and Planning has to be done by the, 20/12/11. The next deadline is for the production stage, and this has to be done by the 03/02/12. My last deadline date is for the evaluation, which I need to make sure that I get it on my blog in time, and this is for the 24/02/12.

Targets

1. Meet the deadline, with everything up to date on the blog.
2. Take more screen shots for the evaluation.
3. Pay more attention to details on the product.
4. Try and organise the presentation of the blog before the deadline date.

Final front cover and contents page

On my front page I have used standard sans serrif text, I have also used a varity of differet colours to try and make the text stand out from the background. I have also used a callout just below the masthead, to draw the readers in. I have put our main story in red to make it stand out from the rest of the text.
On my contents page I have used a gradient of black to green being in the middle. I have put an editors message on our page to communicate with our readers. I have used a mix of serrif text and sans serrif text. I have used a varity of images to portray what our stories are about. On this page I have made our main story stand out by using large bold text.

Appealing to my Target Audience

Today I am figuring out what is appealing to my target audience.

Model- Male, happy facial expression, casual clothes, holding some folders.
Layout- Masthead at the top, barcode at bottom right, price and date just underneath the masthead, main picture of the model (behind the text), background of a library where the picture will be taken.
Colours- using contrasting colours for text.
Masthead- WSF times.

My target audience

Today I have figured out my target audience.

They will be aspirers and main streamers who rate E on the jicnar scale however they will be A level college students so there culture and lifestyle will be more of a C1 on the scale. They will be 16-19 years old and of both genders they will be decision pending on the life stage categories. They will listen to modern music the type that would appear in the top 40 they will also watch E4 and comedy central instead of BBC news and ITV1. They prefer modern Hollywood blockbusters instead of old classics (Florence of Arabia). They will be studying sociology, psychology, critical thinking and health and care.

Preliminary Task

Hi, Iam Chloe, this is my media task, and this is what i have to do:

Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
